  • Today at 10 am EST, students all over the country marched out of their schools and into the streets to protest gun violence and to support gun reform. This was part of National Walkout Day, which we covered here, and the march lasted a total of seventeen minutes — a minute for every victim of the Parkland shooting. Nickelodeon and MTV, both of whom have a history of having an audience in the age range of both the victims and protesters of the Parkland shooting — have shown their allegiance with the protestors by going silent for seventeen minutes.

Nickelodeon’s message read: “In support of kids leading the way today, Nickelodeon will be off the air today until 17 minutes after the hour.” MTV also went silent for 17 minutes and aired in silence, profiles of 17 students who are leading the charge to push forward stronger gun control.

What do you think of Nickelodeon and MTV’s protests? Should other companies follow suit? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter at @WhatsTrending.
