This Meme Put Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” Back on the Rock Charts

If Stevie Nicks didn’t know about the “Me, An Intellectual” joke, she does now.

In late March, Twitter user @bottledfleet posted this tweet —

That video has 133,000 retweets and has been viewed over 6 million times. The song is “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac of their landmark 1977 album, Rumours. And the song charted at #14 on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs list. Not bad for a 40-year-old song that Stevie Nicks notably wrote in “about 10 minutes.”

The meme appears to be single-handedly responsible for the track’s 36% increase in downloads and 24% increase in streams. And Rumours is now #13 on the Top Rock Albums chart.

It’s unlikely, however, Fleetwood Mac will be that shocked by the album’s popularity. Back in 1977-1978, it set a Billboard record for most weeks topping the Billboard 200 by a group.

We’ve been unable to track down the source of that color guard video, but we really do think it can make any song danceable. And, it looks like the meme really has created some new Fleetwood Macheads.

So, Rumours is having another big moment.

The “Dreams” resurgence comes right on the heels of a renewed interest in the Fleetwood Mac song, “The Chain,” which was featured on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 soundtrack.
