I think it’s safe to say these past few years have not gone as well for Paul Ryan as he sort of hoped they would. On January 18th, 2016, Donald Trump, an unapologetic opponent of the poor in everything but name, was sworn into office, and now, following the raid of his lawyer, Michael Cohen, a mere 14 months later, things seem in dire shape for the Republican party come midterms, and the history books. It is under these auspices that Paul Ryan has announced he is no longer seeking re-election, although given his exit speech to the press today, it doesn’t seem like he’ll be addressing any of the issues.
Ryan said: “You realize something when you take this job. It’s a big job with a lot riding on you, but you also know this is not a job that does not last forever. You realize you hold the office for just a small part of our history. So you better make the most of it. I like to think I’ve done my part, my little part in history to set us on a better course. When asked what part his possible loss in the midterm elections played in his decisions, Paul Ryan said: “None whatsoever actually,” which is very likely not to be true, but whatever — he’s gone.
Most likely to let Trump get away with desecrating the constitution in the private sector. Godspeed.
