  • Janelle Monáe, creator of three brilliant albums about a robot superfuture, and the writer of the incredibly sexy “PYNK” and “Make Me Feel“, recently came out as pansexual to Rolling Stone. She told journalist Brittany Spanos —

“Being a queer black woman in America,” she says, taking a breath as she comes out, “someone who has been in relationships with both men and women — I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker.” She initially identified as bisexual, she clarifies, “but then later I read about pansexuality and was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.’ I’m open to learning more about who I am.”

The article also goes into how Monáe hid her sexuality earlier for fear of being judged, and much of her original ‘The ArchAndroid’ album (about robots running from the government) was about her fear of being judged. She tells Spanos —

“I felt misunderstood,” she says. “I was like, ‘Before I self-destruct, before I become a confused person in front of the world, let me seek some help.’ I was afraid for anybody to see me not at the top of my game. That obsession was too much for me.”

Monáe has always been a queer icon and hero, and now that she’s out, she will be all the more. Her new album, ‘Dirty Computer’, comes out on April 27th, and promises to be another chapter in her ridiculously ambitious cycle of afro-futurist albums.
