  • Google wants to be responsible for providing Internet access to the world. Project Loon sets out to make that happen by sending balloons into the stratosphere to provide Wi-Fi to the earth below.

Each balloon will travel with atmospheric winds on the edge of space and connect to the ground using antennas equipped with specialized radio frequency technology.

According to the Project Loon website, the venture is “designed to connect people in rural and remote areas, help fill coverage gaps, and bring people back online after disasters.”

The trial run begins later this month when 30 balloons will launch in New Zealand with a small group of Project Loon pioneers testing the technology in Christchurch and Canterbury.
