Did Sacha Baron Cohen Really Kill That Old Lady At The Britannia Awards?

  • Sacha Baron Cohen was honored with the Charlie Chaplin Award For Excellence In Comedy at the BAFTA LA Jaguar Britannia Awards this past Sunday evening. While he charmed the audience with his rendition of Chaplin’s famous penguin walk, something also went completely amiss…

After receiving the award from Selma Hayek, Baron Cohen was presented with Chaplin’s cane from “Grace Cullington,” who was introduced as the little girl who appeared in Chaplin’s famous “City Lights” film of 1931. As Today points out, the name “Grace Cullington” cannot be found in association with the famous movie, and it’s likely that the old lady was played by a stunt woman who was in on the joke.

Afterwards, Cohen took the stage to say, “Grace Cullington is the oldest, no, sorry, was the oldest surviving Chaplin co-star. I dedicate my award to her. This is obviously a tragedy. She has upstaged me. But on the bright side, what a great way to go, giving an award to me. Thus, she’ll probably make the Oscars’ In Memoriam segment.”

What do you think? Was it a stunt worthy of being conducted in Chaplin’s honor or did the prankster go too far?
