  • The NFL free agency frenzy is in full swing, and with so much speculation and mayhem, how are we supposed to figure out what’s fact and what’s fiction? For those of us not willing to wait until the dust settles, relying on traditional news sources means long-winded conjecture and even longer delays reporting cuts, trades, and contracts.

Luckily, the players themselves have taken to Twitter and aren’t shy about letting their fans know just what’s going on during this period of chaos. Not only is it great for fans to get these realtime updates, but it also humanizes the process and gives us a glimpse into the emotions and uncertainty that these players experience while their fate — where they’ll play, where they’ll live, if they’ll be a Super Bowl contender — is being negotiated.

Let’s take a look at just a few players around the NFL whose immediate futures have yet to be determined.

It’s clear the Saints aren’t going to keep running back Reggie Bush at his $11.8 million base salary and $16 million cap figure. But will he agree to a new salary or become a free agent? As of now, no one knows. Including, it appears, Reggie himself:

  • Browns free agent safety Abram Elam tweets that he has a few options, but allegedly the Dallas Cowboys have him at the top of their list.

  • Reading the players tweets reminds me a little too much of what it must be like for the kid who’s picked last in gym class; it’s almost awkward to see these stellar athletes who are paid hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars, metaphorically tweeting, “Hey, pick me!” but whether we like or not, Twitter has set a new precedent and with the up-to-the-minute news comes raw, uncensored emotion.

I wouldn’t feel too sorry for them, though. After all, they do get to play the best sport on earth. So enjoy the insanity that is this shortened free agency period, even if it means saying goodbye to some of your favorite players, and get ready for some football!
