  • Yesterday, REM announced they’ve “decided to call it a day as a band.” After 31 years together, the rock group from Athens, Georgia is splitting up amicably. In a statement of his own, Mike Mills concluded, “The time just feels right.”

The news left many fans in shock, though it has spawned infinitely more jokes and puns than it has tearful tweets. “It’s the end of the world as we know it,” is the obvious go to, and has seen plenty of traction in both tweets and headlines alike.

Though the joke that is taking over Twitter right now, plays on another set of lyrics. Early this morning, @BeCo74 tweeted, “I fainted in the curry house when I heard REM had split up. That’s me in the korma,” playing on REM’s “That’s Me in the Corner.” Retweeted hundreds of times, the joke has evolved into a Twitter meme within hours, giving the band a fitting sendoff.
