Kindle Fire – Only $199 and a New Direction for Amazon

  • There’s no doubt that the tablet is also being used to increase subscriptions to Amazon Prime, their $79 dollar per year subscription service that offers streaming video and free two-day shipping on all of its items, with a free 30-day trial. The tablet would also allow them to fully take advantage of their new deals with Hollywood partners like 20th Century Fox. Monday, Amazon announced they would be adding 2,000 older films and television shows from the studio.

    Bezos also used the stage to reveal the new Kindle Touch, an e-reader with no buttons and a touch screen starting at $99, with a basic Kindle e-reader at a new price of $79.

    The announcements caused a rise in Amazon’s stock by 3.2 percent to $231.29 in the morning. Some are saying the new well-priced tablet might be a direct competitor to Apple’s $499 iPad. Barnes and Noble, who’s also expected to announce a Nook Color 2 for the holiday season, currently sells their Nook Color e-reader at $249. Their stock alternately dropped today by 6.2 percent to $12.39.
