Also debuting in only 1,100 theaters is the faith-based drama “Courageous” which is being distributed by Sony/Tri-Star. The PG-13 film about four police officers who struggle with their faith is not to be underestimated in terms of its potential strength at the box office. Grass roots marketing and a devoted audience that is likely to vote with their dollars could make this one a credible performer this weekend.

Disney’s “The Lion King,” which has been the surprise early fall season leader, has an unprecedented shot at making it three in a row at the top of the movie food chain this weekend. A gross in the mid-teens will put it in the thick of the fight with at least one of the newcomers and an equally strong second weekend contender. An amazing $80 million total will be secured in this lion’s den by the end of the weekend.
Summit Entertainment’s “50/50” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen as best friends who have to deal with a cancer diagnosis, has received positive pre-release praise and should open with a solid gross of around $15 million. The R-rated comedy boasts a terrific cast including Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anjelica Huston.

“Moneyball” from Sony has been hitting home runs all week long topping the daily box office chart (after a second place weekend debut) with close to $2 million per day as great word-of-mouth has made it a must-see Fall film. The Brad Pitt sports biography has won praise across the board from critics, and audiences have clearly taken notice as it swings for the fences with a second weekend in the mid-teens and around $40 million by Sunday night.
Warner Bros.’ “Dolphin Tale” in 3-D has thrived despite a surprisingly competitive fall family film marketplace. Starring Harry Connick Jr., the PG-rated film garnered a rare A+ CinemaScore rating and should thus perform swimmingly this weekend with a gross in the low teens and a total of around $30 million by the end of the weekend.
Also looking to move into fourth place is Universal’s PG-13 mystery thriller “Dream House,” starring Daniel Craig, which is expected to nail between $12 million and $14 million on its opening weekend.
