Simpsons: Is the Longest Running Sit-Com Ending?

After 488 episodes, a movie, a theme park ride, and an endless trail of merchandise – The Simpsons might soon be coming to an end.

Since debuting on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987 as a series of shorts, the show has gone on to become the longest running sitcom, animated, and prime-time show in American TV history. Paving the way for a number of shows, such as Family Guy, South Park, and Futurama – The Simpsons is more than pop culture, it’s a phenomenon.

So, why does it have to end? Fox Television says it, “can’t continue under its current financial model.” With viewership for the current season falling short of seasons past, the producers are asking for a 45% pay decrease from the main six voice actors in order to continue the show. With syndication of the episodes through countless portals bringing in the most revenue, the actors have agreed to a 30% decrease in salary in return for a percentage of distribution and merchandising.

No word yet from either camp as to any new advancements in these negotiations, but it would appear Fox remains hopeful of the outcome, stating “23 seasons in, The Simpsons is as creatively vibrant as ever and beloved by millions around the world. We believe this brilliant series can and should continue […]”
