Recognition of the arrival of the Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus, in the Americas varies from parades to no observance at all. This isn’t surprising, considering the historical facts of the occasion have stirred controversy ever since Columbus first landed on the shores of the New World nearly 520 years ago. Many people argue that America was not Columbus’s discovery because people had already lived there for thousands of years.
