Wednesday, a gunman opened fire inside a crowded beauty salon–killing eight and leaving a ninth victim in critical condition. Authorities have identified the alleged shooter as 42-year-old Scott Evans De Kraai, the ex-husband of Michelle Fournier, one of the salon’s employees. According to friends and co-workers of Fournier, she was in a custody dispute with her estranged husband.
Arrested after a short car chase, DeKraai was reportedly wearing a bullet-proof vest and had multiple weapons in his car.
The police have not released the names of the nine victims, but friends and a relatives said Fournier and, salon owner, Randy Fannin were both killed during the shooting.
“Seal Beach is a small safe community. We don’t experience these things,” Sgt. Steve Bowles of the Seal Beach Police Department told reporters Wednesday evening.
A group of Seal Beach residents congregated at a vigil Wednesday night to mourn the lives of those lost in the rampage. Another gathering is scheduled for today.
