  • Intrepid rescue workers are working nonstop during the tragic aftermath of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that rocked eastern Turkey on Sunday. While the death toll is currently at 270, local authorities predict it could go over 500. The natural disaster is the worst earthquake to hit the country since 1999.

Turkey Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said the number of people trapped in the rubble of fallen buildings is unknown, and that the rural villages could be seeing the worst of the devastation in the area. “Because the buildings are made of adobe they are more vulnerable to quakes,” said Erdogan. “I must say that almost all buildings in such villages are destroyed.”

As temperatures drop, concern for the warmth and safety of unfound survivors is thickening. Erdogan made it a point to assure the public that the rescue search will continue until every person in need of shelter is found. “We are not going to leave people to their own devices in the winter cold,” Erdogan said.

  • During this time of strife for Turkey, leaders and citizens around the world are offering their support.
