Congratulations, Internet activists! Thanks to unprecedented online and offline protests that took place this week, SOPA and PIPA, two online censorships bills that have outraged web professionals across the country, are on hold. Shortly after a Senate decision came down to postpone a key vote on PIPA, SOPA was sent back to the drawing board to be redrafted. According to SopaStrike.com, 13 million people took the time to tell Congress to protect free speech rights on the internet.
While the solidarity that was displayed this week is commendable, it’s time to take business to the next level. SOPA may be on pause, but the issue isn’t going to just disappear. The bill’s chief sponsor, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) said in a statement on Tuesday, “to enact legislation that protects consumers, businesses, and jobs from foreign thieves who steal America’s intellectual property, we will continue to bring together industry representatives and members to find ways to combat online piracy.”
So take note, Internets! Now is not the time for us to be resting on our laurels. Now is the time to educate ourselves about the proposed legislation and share ways to come up with alternatives, because the entertainment industry is likely not going to take today’s news lying down.
