  • Verizon and Redbox hinted at a new service today that could bring a wider selection of movie streaming to customers around the US. The joint venture is reported to launch in the second half of 2012.

Redbox is a popular kiosk-operated movie and game rental system that has had success bringing movies earlier to market than some popular streaming services, such as Netlix. Because Netflix (or Hulu) cannot always generate as much money for newly released movies, such services often have to wait while other paid options, such as iTunes and Amazon, are given first dips at offering hot titles.

“Our joint venture with Verizon will enable us to bring them even more value by offering expanded content offerings and greater flexibility for how and when they enjoy entertainment,” said Coinstar CEO Paul Davis, head of the parent company that owns Redbox.

What streaming services do you use most often to watch movies? Hulu, Netflix. Amazon, iTunes…something? Would you switch to the new service?
