Katie Couric vs. Sarah Palin: Morning News Showdown

  • It was announced last Thursday that Katie Couric would be guest-hosting ABC’s Good Morning America for the week of April 2, filling Robin Right’s spot while she was on vacation. This is a controversial move for Couric, considering her longstanding and wildly successful gig with GMA’s morning show rival, The Today Show.

How did NBC choose to retaliate? By booking Sarah Palin as a co-host, of course — inciting a battle royale between two women who have very powerful standings in the media — albeit for quite different reasons.

    Everyone remembers this, right?

  • While NBC’s Today has been leading the ratings every week for nearly 16 years since Couric joined in 1995, GMA’s numbers have been climbing most recently thanks to recaps of primetime shows like Dancing with the Stars. Could having Couric fill an empty chair be just enough for GMA to outseat Today for the number one spot or is Palin’s unexpected visit enough to steady NBC at the wheel?

Early risers have taken to Twitter to sort it out, giving #PalinOnToday and #KatieOnGMA a boost the twittersphere:

Today Sarah Palin finally gets to prove that she’s better at being a catty talking head than Katie Couric. She’s like our Aaron Burr.

NBC is doing it wrong. They should be making all of these announcements in the week after Katie Couric on ABC to draw back in viewers.
