  • “The kid’s a communist, the father’s a mortician … does the mother run a leper colony?” Woody Allen jests in his first acting role since Scoop in 2006.

There’s no question that the director adores his expensive cities — from Manhattan to Vicky Christina Barcelona to Allen’s last film, Midnight in Paris, which won him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Now he sends his love to Rome, with all of the typical Woody Allen tropes, including naval-gazing, infidelity, snappy witticisms, and jokes about communism.

The film is broken up into four vignettes, starring Allen himself, along Roberto Benigni, Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page and Greta Gerwig.
