  • This weekend could mark one of the best Lyrid Meteor shower in years, with the darkest phase of the moon coinciding with the peak of annual light show. Though the light show is typically “modest”, according to National Geographic, there known to be surprises, and the occasional “fireball,” bright bursts of light from some meteors.

“Typical hourly rates for the Lyrids can run between 10 and 20 meteors. However, rates as high as a hundred meteors per hour are not uncommon,” said MacMillan Space Centre astronomer Raminder Singh Samra.

Sky watchers and romantic-date enthusiasts should look toward the Lyra constallation, near the bright star, Vega.
