June is Gay Pride month and Oreo, “America’s favorite cookie,” is giving its classic cookie a controversial twist with layers of rainbow icing.
The Kraft/Nabisco cookie company posted a picture of its LGBT-friendly rainbow Oreo on Facebook, with the caption “Proudly support love!” After only 16 hours online, the picture spread throughout Facebook with over 150,000 Likes, 40,00 shares, and 19,000 comments. The Oreo Facebook page itself has almost 27 million Likes and 150,000 people talking right now.
@Oreo also tweeted the picture at the same time, telling followers to “Celebrate your pride for love!” now with over 820 retweets and 275 favorites.
After seeing a very mainstream company take such a bold stance on a hot sociopolitical issue, some will be buying their first Oreo cookie and some will be buying their last.
What do you think about Oreo’s symbol of Pride?
