  • Young filmmaker, Brandon Cronenberg—son of David Cronenberg—introduces Antiviral, a new Canadian horror film that recently competed in the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. The trailer begins with an ad promising consumers that they can get closer to their favorite celebrities like never before…

It’s clear as the trailer progresses that it’s a film that calls into question the cultish, obsessive following of celebrities. In this case, people want to contract the very same diseases as their favorite idol. The trailer guarantees a certain kind of classical approach to a modern idea. Horror has always had its place as a genre, but “body horror”—a genre specifically for body destruction or degeneration made popular by David Cronenberg—has become increasingly popular. Films like Teeth (2007), The Human Centipede (2009), and Black Swan (2010) are just a handful of recent examples. Seems like Brandon is following in his father’s footsteps.

In Brandon’s first full-length film, people may recognize the fresh, young face of Caleb Landry Jones, from his portrayal of Banshee in X-Men: First Class. In Antiviral, he plays Syd March, working for a company that distributes celebrity ailments to willing clients. After getting infected by a mysterious disease that kills superstar Hannah Geist (Sarah Gadon), March must solve the mystery behind her death to save his own life.

Sporting up-and-comers alongside other more classic, familiar actors such as Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), Antiviral proves to be something to look forward to.

Do you think can stomach it?
