  • The Roman Catholic Church is truly embracing the digital age this week.

First, Pope Benedict XVI created his own Twitter account, @Pontifex, and sent his first ever tweet on Wednesday. In front of an audience at the Vatican hall, the Pope effectively pressed the screen on his iPad and told the Internet, “Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart.” He then proceeded to answer various questions submitted to him with the #askpontifex hashtag.

To commemorate the occasion, the Vatican YouTube channel released a video entitled, “Benedict XVI now on twitter,” which documents the experience.

According to The New York Times, the Pope is expected to tweet in various languages and use the platform to to engage with the Roman Catholic Church’s 1.2 billion followers.
