If It Isn’t Sexy, Do We Tune Out?
The Most Important “Sexy” Model Video Ever
This video is so important and genius. It both serves a great cause by getting out important information and makes a strong point about our society and the way we ingest information.
Save the Children USA hired models for what they explained as a very sexy commercial video, but once they did a couple typical, sexy lines, they were then given cue cards with important, serious, and often morbid facts and told to read them sexily. Though some tried more than others once reading the cards, none of the models could make information like “In 2012, 6.6 million children under the age of 5 died” sound sexy. That is because this information isn’t sexy, not one bit. It’s depressing and morbid, but it’s true and the more we know the more we can help.
In our society we often try to make things sexy or attractive so that people will pay attention, but the most important things can’t be made sexy. Isn’t it sad that many people will tune out information if it isn’t presented to them in an attractive way?
I think at some point in time we are all guilty of it. We change the channel when a sad commercial comes on or don’t click on the article about the war abroad. I’m not saying that that makes us terrible people, sometimes we click away from these things because it does move us, it hurts us that people are hurting and we don’t want to feel that way. That makes sense, but sometimes we look away or change the channel because the information seems boring or we “just aren’t in the mood,” and don’t even get the impact of the information that other people are struggling and maybe we can help. If we only give attention to things that are sexy and shiny, we won’t be educated about the state of our world and how we can better the lives of other people.
That’s the incredible thing about this video. It both gets people’s attention with the “sexy” models then uses that attention to get out serious information. On top of that, it makes a statement about our society and our attention span.
So please go watch this video and get the important information. Also, remember this next time you see a commercial or article about a serious subject maybe actually stop and watch or read it.
