The news came as a shock to even those in current contact with him, as Hamlisch had plans to conduct the Pasadena Symphony in September and the New York Philharmonic on New Year’s Eve.
The accomplished musician was best known for composing the Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway musical, A Chorus Line, along with scoring classic films such as Sophie’s Choice, The Way We Were, The Sting, and Ordinary People. His beautiful body of work placed him in a small, elite school of artists to have won all four major awards in his lifetime: four Grammys, three Oscars, four Emmys, and a TONY Award.
He is survived by Terre, his wife of 25 years.
