Over the last couple of weeks, communities have joined forces to fight against racial injustice. In the process, they’ve taken down confederate monuments and other symbols representing the oppressing time periods of the past. This past week, various racial injustice activist suggested the United States national anthem be changed to another song.

Why? Its lyrics were written by Francis Scott Key, a slaveholding lawyer who expressed white supremacist views during the 1800s.

“When he wrote the poem that would, in 1931, become the national anthem and proclaim our nation ‘the land of the free,’ … Key not only profited from slaves, he harbored racist conceptions of American citizenship and human potential,” Christopher Wilson writes in an article for Smithsonian magazine. “Africans in America, he said, were: ‘a distinct and inferior race of people, which all experience proves to be the greatest evil that afflicts a community.‘”

Many song suggestions have been presented
by people on Twitter. Some are pretty good suggesting, heartfelt and simple like John Lennon’s Imagine or Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.”

Others are a bit odd or non-traditional. Below are the more “out there” song suggestions people in the twitter-verse have come up with it. Which one is your favorite?

Shortly after Kanye West announced he is running for president, people started suggesting some of his biggest hits to replace The Star-Spangled Banner. Not your typical classical song, but imagine kicking off sporting events and school assemblies with “American Boy.”

Jokes aside, the idea to change the anthem is a step forwards towards stomping out the racist roots that built the U.S.A.

An article by Yahoo Music’s Editor in Chief, Lyndsey Parker, asks if it’s time to adopt an anthem with a “more inclusive message”. Speaking to Parker, historian and scholar Daniel E. Walker agrees. He says: “The 53-year-old in me says, we can’t change things that have existed forever. But then there are these young people who say that America needs to live up to its real creed.

“And so, I do side with the people who say that we should rethink this as the national anthem, because this is about the deep-seated legacy of slavery and white supremacy in America, where we do things over and over and over again that are a slap in the face of people of colour and women. We do it first because we knew what we were doing, and we wanted to be sexist and racist. And now we do it under the guise of ’legacy.’”

People did mention more serious songs to replace it and the petition to change it to “American the Beautiful” has a little over 3k signatures with a goal of 5k.
