Many employees are taking a stand to companies they have worked for alongside the #blacklivesmattermovement, and employees at First Media are taking a stand against their bosses or FORMER bosses to say the least.
If you haven’t heard of First Media, it claims to be a company “built by women for women.” You might recognize some of the content they produce through outlets they own such as SoYummy, Blossom and Blusher.
A lot of these mediums are easily digestible how to videos but the complaints isn’t about the brands they are working with but moreso the supervisors of the company.
In an extensive and anonymous list submitted to What’s Trending, the company faces allegations of racism and poor treatment of staff. From statements of supervisors saying they “couldn’t tell black talent apart,” claims like “black women don’t sell,” and even a shocking incident where a set of black hands were whitewashed for a branded advertisement shoot.
The company claims that the hands were an isolated incident or innocent slip up and came to the surprise of many, but many of the staff have actually left the company due to these incidents.
First media was actually started Sharon Rechter and was to help empower women in media. Some of the supervisors these complaints stemmed from involved an individual named Aaaron Cahn and others including Yuval Retcher, Guy Oranim and Aimee Ryerson, when many of the management complaints came up, staff say the management were quick to turn a blind eye.
In their statement to WT, the former workers stated that HR claimed to side with management and chastise the workers for spreading rumors around the company. They even said they would give more “training” to help the situation but none of the employees saw improvement.
As a response from First Media, the company issued to What’s Trending the company wrote: “This person is no longer employed by the company. As of the end of February of 2020, the company (and its senior management) took responsibility for, apologized for, and, more importantly, took actions to repair its past mistakes and shortcomings. There has not been a single complaint about racial comments or behavior at First Media, before or after this single complaint.” “The termination of the other employee you referred to at the bottom of page 1 of the complaint was based solely on merits and had no correlation to race. In order to protect this person’s privacy, we cannot elaborate on it.”
Looking at the employees complaints in the company it seems that the racism did not stem from Aaron Cahn.
Even on Glassdoor.com reviews exist like “They allowed racism and sexism to run rampant in the company while HR only protects the company and not the employees. People have been talked down to, sexually harassed and much more. First Media produces fake news and content that is extremely misleading in order to get views and brand deals.” another one reads: It’s not a good look to bash current employees as an attempt to save First Media’s reputation. Your employees have serious concerns and are brave enough to voice their opinions, yet it is chalked up to “entitlement”. Stop writing fake glassdoor reviews to try and bury the bad ones. They’re not gonna stop coming.
From these statements and lack of accountability, it seems really hard to give a false narrative or portrayal rather than empathy for these mistakes.
One supervisor went to defend Aaron Cahn as well through all these incidents saying “what would happen to his children” and more.
But sources say there was actually a resignation letter from Aaron Cahn but the company denied the letter. Workers even organized a walk out of the building if there wasn’t change demanded.
It looks like the company has really been trying to sweep all this under the rug and I am interested to see what is to come overall for the future of this company.
