Just released on YouTube after the closing of Go90, Funny or Die is letting us view all eight episodes of the hilarious and cutting webseries “Tween Fest” at our leisure. The series, created by Braford Evans and Nick Ciarelli and directed by Scott Gaidner gives us a hellish parody of Vidcon, as Tween Fest is an influencer convention in a desert started by the hapless father of an influencer, played by John Michael Higgins who was nominated for an Emmy for this role, in order to boost his daughter Maddisyn’s (Joey King’s) pimple popping YouTube career. But there’s more to life than pimple popping, and her quitting her YouTube career sets off a terrible and calamitous series of events that could end… YouTube culture as we know it!? Well, no. But it’s very good.
The series, which was originally released in 2016, makes fun of the Try Guys, FouseyTube, Matty8, King Bach, Dr. Pimple Popper, The Janoskians and includes such stars such as Glee’s Jane Lynch, Mike Mitchell, an early role for Champions’ Josie Totah, SNL’s Tim Meadows and David Koechner. Additionally Drew Tarver, star of the upcoming Comedy Central show “The Other Two” and “Bajillion Dollar Properties” stars as Zayden Ostin Storm, a “social experiment” YouTuber whose behavior is often more self serving than he’d like to admit, and Lou Wilson as Dusty Del Grosso, a Family Guy voice impressionist who wants to branch out to something more… something greater… and become a vaping star.
The culture of YouTube, which has recently been analyzed by Shane Dawson as one where figures will do anything and everything for views, has been thrown into a more critical eye as of late. Tweenfest explores the concept as well, and if you want to continue to see YouTube culture’s both flaws and positive attributes explored, this series is… I don’t know, I bet you’ll like it.
I should also mention at this point that Evans and Ciarelli are friends from the comedy scene, but I would plug this thing regardless: the show is a brilliant and strange set up of YouTube culture, and its eight episode arc paint an incredible story that… well, I think you guys would like and– oh look, it’s episode two! Check it out!
