Nothing is off-limits in the world of fashion, even prison garb. Two years ago, no one would ever imagine wearing one of those famous orange jumpsuits around town – except maybe on Halloween. But that’s all been changed by everyone’s favorite show Orange is the New Black.
The Sheriff of the Saginaw County Jail in Michigan became concerned by the new trend, reports MLive.
“It’s because as you see shows on television, like ‘Orange Is The New Black,’ some people think it’s cool to look like an inmate of the Saginaw County Jail with wearing all-orange jumpsuits out at the mall or in public,” says Sheriff William Federspiel.
Federspiel isn’t just a cold-blooded fashion-hater. This causes a real concern for public safety. “It’s a concern because we do have our inmates out sometimes doing work in the public, and I don’t want anyone to confuse them or have them walk away,” says Federspiel.
Yeah, we don’t want that either. So what do you do when people decide to emanate the bold colors and glam styles of inmates? Make the prisoners look like movie prisoners from the 50’s!
That’s right, the sheriff decided to put the prisoners in those famous black and white jumpsuits a la Charlie Chaplin. The suits cost the same as the orange ones, and are still recognizable to the public.
The sheriff actually seems like a pretty cool guy. He keeps up to date with pop culture, and had this response to inmates who were upset about the change in wardrobe: “‘Too bad. Don’t come to jail.’ If you come to dinner at my house and you don’t like what I’m serving, don’t come back. If you don’t like the food, don’t come back. If you don’t like the clothes that I give you, don’t come back. I didn’t ask you to come wear this uniform.”
Let’s just hope stripes aren’t “in” right now!
Here are 5 jail-inspired outfits, just in case you wanted to get in on the “prison-chic” trend:

This outfit is perfect in or out of jail. Walking around the mall, the accessories say “hey, this is a fashion choice, not a sign that I just escaped from jail.” However, if you DO happen to get arrested, that necklace would be the perfect weapon to protect yourself.
