If your significant other threw you into a sea of sharks, how would you react?
A boyfriend decided to take the risk and the internet had quite the response in return. And not only did he make this very controversial and terrifying decision, but he also filmed the situation and posted it to TikTok. Currently, the man is facing tons of backlash on the platform as well as other social media hotspots such as Twitter and Instagram.
John Schoepf and his girlfriend Taylor, along with a few of their friends, went on a trip to Mexico. On their getaway, they walked by an enclosed area on the boardwalk that had sharksuckers. These sharks are not dangerous and are also known as remoras. They attach to larger sharks, rays and other marine life. However, Taylor was not aware of that information at the time.

In fact, Taylor is terrified of sharks and John revealed this to his followers afterward. In the video, John pretends to act surprised when he sees a “shark” before tossing his girlfriend into the water. He then pulls his girlfriend out of the ocean and she looks completely horrified. In the video, Taylor understandably cries and looks traumatized after being pulled out of the water.
The video gained attention almost immediately on TikTok. It even caused a series of debates under its comments. While some understood the joke and found humor in it, others called it “abusive behavior” and “cruel.” Some went as far as saying that this act was a huge red flag.
Another red flag that followers pointed out was John’s TikTok bio. It includes a Biggie Smalls lyric that says, “I don’t chase them, I replace them.” Many pointed out that this is an interesting way to sum up your personality on social media…especially when you have a girlfriend. His bio has since been changed.
After the video blew up on social media, John ended up posting a follow-up video. He explained that it was simply a prank and a funny joke. As a result of the controversy, John even stated that this whole situation was blown out of proportion. He has taken the time to respond to some comments, but there are seemingly too many to keep up with now. The video currently has over 17,000 comments.
The follow-up video also caused backlash. Many accused him of trying to justify his abusive behavior. Others told Taylor that this “red flag” was enough to break up with him and move on from the relationship. On the other hand, a select few stood up for John and told other TikTok users to go easy on him. His behavior has been analyzed and criticized by millions of people in less than a week.

One user said: “People are too sensitive nowadays. It’s like they were never in a fun playful relationship before, glad y’all are happy.”
John even replied to another person who went viral by saying “these people are ridiculous” in reference to those criticizing his behavior.
Pranks on TikTok are notorious for causing split reactions. Some users love pranks despite their consequences while others think that many times they go too far. The video, which features the classic Jaws theme song, is now one of the most talked about TikToks currently.
John Schoepf insists that his girlfriend is fine and that their relationship is solid. However, users have not heard much from Taylor first hand besides the very brief follow-up. video. She was not tagged in the original TikTok and has yet to make her own video explaining her side of the story without John.
Regardless of the fact that these sharks truly are harmless, how would you react afterward?
John currently has over 20,000 followers on the platform. The video, released only two days ago, has now surpassed 5 million views.
