Most of us don’t give a second thought about what happens to our poop after it’s flushed down the the toilet but, as AsapSCIENCE details here, the process for removing that poop and reusing it is pretty fascinating. After going through an initial filtration process that removes larger objects, the leftover sludge becomes a feast for bacteria that literally eats the pathogens out of the liquid. The bacteria is able to produce methane gas, which in turn actually powers the plant that processes your poop. And the remaining nutrients? It ends up as fertilizer, which is then used to grow the very food you eat.
