  • Nelson Mandela died today at the age of 95. Mandela spent his life fighting for the freedom he had taken from him. He paid the price for his activism, spending nearly thirty years in jail for speaking out against apartheid. He would later go on to become the first black president in South Africa. He is known across the world as a leader in peace and equality.

  • Mandela paved the way for future politicians. Namely, President Barack Obama, who made a speech from the White House in his honor. “We’ve lost one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good individuals that any of us will share time with on this earth.”

  • His ability to remain optimistic and proactive towards a better future following his imprisonment only furthered international admiration. An ability that led to his rise from prisoner to President.

And as Obama pointed out, “He belongs to the ages.” The world may have lost Nelson Mandela, but his legacy will never parish.

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
