  • Charles Dickens’ classic novel, Great Expectations comes to life on the big screen (again) with some of the U.K.’s finest and most notable talent — meaning, it’s basically a Harry Potter reunion.

Directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Helena Bonham Carter stars as the sinister Miss Havisham, along with Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch, Jessie Cave as Biddy, and Robbie Coltrane as Mr. Jaggers.

Jeremy Irvine leads as Pip in the coming of age tale about an orphan who deals with the struggles of love and society after receiving financial support from a mysterious benefactor.

Newell’s adaptation rides on the backs of several predecessors, including Kevin Connor’s 1989 film starring Anthony Hopkins and Jean Simmons, and Alfonso Cuarón’s 1998 film set in contemporary New York, starring Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow.

While a U.S. release date has yet to be announced, 2012’s Great Expectations will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and hit theaters in the U.K. and Germany this fall.
