Joe Jackson, the abusive and controversial patriarch of the Jackson family, has passed away at 89. Joe Jackson has passed away from pancreatic cancer, and is best known for siring the musicians that would become the superstar Jackson siblings, including Janet Jackson, members of the Jackson 5, and of course Michael Jackson. Joe Jackson’s cancer diagnosis and death was something Jackson new in the final days of his life, sending out a Tweet implying he may have few sunsets in his future.

Joe Jackson’s life is one of legend and tragedy. Although he is often credit in helping shape his children into the superstars that they ended up becoming, his strategies amounted to so much abuse. The original Jackson 5 — made up of Tito, Jermaine, Milo, Jackie and of course Michael Jackson, was on legend, but in 1993, Michael Jackson told Oprah Winfrey that their father would threaten to whip them with a belt if they made any mistakes in their act. Joe Jackson defended the actions, saying – “I’m glad I was tough, because look what I came out with. I came out with some kids that everybody loved all over the world. And they treated everybody right.”

Joe Jackson’s family remembers him on social media, defending his legacy and asking the media to remember him in his better light.

Joe Jackson’s legacy in music history, as so many legacies have been before him, will remain complex and one that remains in the history books along with his hyper talented children. His legend is that of his son, Michael Jackson, and as future historians of music, entertainment, and just 20th century entertainment will read on the history of pop culture, Joe Jackson will be there, dividing audience and conversations for eons to come, and influencing many with the music that he managed.
