  • The trailer for Ghost in the Shell is here… and fans of the Japanese media franchise are not happy about it. Why? Scarlett Johansson.

Ghost in the Shell details the story of cyborg policewoman, Major, and her task force, Section 9, who are tasked with sabotaging Hanka Robotic’s artificial intelligence technology.

Though Johansson looks totally badass in the trailer, fans are not happy about her casting in the film. Being that the movie is based on a popular Japanese manga and anime series, fans were hoping to see a Japanese woman take on the lead role.

  • From those few Twitter responses, it’s evident that people are not okay with the “whitewashing” of the film. We do have to remember it’s Hollywood, though… they’re going to cast whoever is going to bring in the big bucks.

During a recent screening of the film, the director of the film addressed the casting criticism he received over Johansson. You can check out the video here:

  • Like he said, Scarlett Johansson is a phenomenal actress. Though some may not agree with this particular role of hers, we really can’t judge her or the film until it is released.

Ghost in the Shell hits theaters on March 31, 2017.
