Redskins Get Into Hot Water Over Team Name
A video made by the National Congress of Native Americans has sparked a recent controversy
The United States Patent and Trademark Office have since denied registration of the NFL team’s name, claiming that their name is “disparaging toward Native Americans.”
This does not change the name of the team or force them to change their name anytime soon, but it is a step in the right direction. The team will most likely appeal the ruling and continue to use their name in the meantime.
Washington Redskins Owner Dan Snyder has been quoted saying, “The Washington Redskins is more than a name we have called our football team for over eight decades. It is a symbol of everything we stand for: strength, courage, pride and respect.” There is no word yet on whether or not these turn of events have changed his mind.
