Tom Holland is the New (White, Straight) Spider-Man
It’s official – “The Impossible” actor Tom Holland is the new Spider-Man of the Marvel universe, filling the contractual obligation that Peter Parker be a white heterosexual teenager.
It was announced today that Holland (who, to be fair, is a talented actor who is not undeserving of the role) will be appearing as Spider-Man in the Marvel franchise, appearing for a cameo in “Captain America: Civil War” before going on to star in stand-alone movies. He’s the second reboot of the character following Toby Maguire in 2002’s “Spider-Man” and Andrew Garfield in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man.”
A new agreement between Sony and Marvel will allow Spider-Man to appear with his fellow Avengers, but fans hoping the reboot would be a chance for added diversity have been disappointed. According to an email released by WikiLeaks, there is a legal licensing agreement that Peter Parker must be heterosexual and Caucasian, just like the last two versions.
Again, none of this is Tom Holland’s fault and he’ll probably do a fine job — but there are people expressing disappointment with the decision.
