  • There’s a lot going on in politics this week! If the latest defense budget passes, then yes, ladies 18-26 we too will now be part of the draft.

The new rules would apply to women who turn 18 on or after January 1st, 2018. The House Armed Servies Committee voted to approve a version of the National Defense Authorization Act (a massive $602 billion dollar budget) that included women in the draft a while back, and surprisingly doesn’t support his own version of the budget.

Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter of California intended the amendment to include women in the draft as a “gotcha amendment,” because he didn’t think liberals would actually vote to include women in the draft. It’s almost like things have changed drastically since the 50’s and we want to be treated equally!

Anyway, his convoluted point to prove Democrats not wanting women to have equal combat roles backfired drastically and it looks like this version of the budget might actually pass.

Among those against the draft were several conservative Republicans including Senator Ted Cruz, who said of the amendment, “It is a radical change that is attempting to be foisted on the American people. The idea that we should forcibly conscript young girls into combat, to my mind, makes little or no sense. It is at a minimum a radical proposition. I could not vote for a bill that did so, particularly that did so without public debate.”

According to Gawker-affliate The Slot,”… Cruz and Heritage Action oppose drafting women because of innate, sexist ideas about women’s roles and physical abilities. Women have served with honor and distinction in combat roles for years, something you wouldn’t know from Heritage Action’s website, which claims that women in the military will hurt men and damage military readiness.”

Apparently, equality is only acceptable until it comes to reproductive rights and war.
