  • Following a contentious battle to fill the seat of the deceased Antonin Scalia, who died in February, 2016 — leaving a seat to be filled in the Supreme Court during the final year of the Obama administration. Barack Obama nominated centrist judge Merrick Garland, and the GOP blocked Obama on the grounds that he only had a year left to go in his term as president. When Trump took office, he nominated incredibly far right judge.

The process towards nominating Gorsuch was a long one and one filled with actions which many deemed questionable towards the constitution, including the GOP with the “nuclear option”, allowing much fewer votes to be allowed to elect Neil Gorsuch, and Neil Gorsuch was elected with a 54-45 margin. We now live in the reality where Donald Trump has appointed a Supreme Court justice only half a day after potentially starting a war.

    We’ll see what happens next.
