Dems Take Control Of House, Offering Checks and Balances to Trump; First Gay Governor Elected

Other victories include Jared Polis becoming the first openly gay governor and Beto's high ranking in Texas redefining what it means to be a Democrat in the once impregnable stronghold.

It’s been an historic night in congress as Donald Trump, a president whose excesses and over reaches have been unprecedented is at long last put in check by a congress which has always cared more about party than country. The Democrats have taken back the House, with current reports putting them at well beyond the 24 seats they needed to gain in order to control it. This is an especially impressive win considering that the constant gerrymandering has long given the GOP the edge when it came to this district, hinting that we are about to see a change of long held norms when it comes to predicting the direction a voting bloc will go — possibly the greatest such change since Richard Nixon appealed to the Southern Democrats turning them into Republicans back during his campaign.

These possible changes were most visible in Texas. Texas has long been a Republican stronghold, but this election saw Ted Cruz beating out the beloved Democratic opponent, Beto O’Rourke, by the slightest of margins. A margin that in the past would have been a blow out, this time was a sliver in a few percentage points. Beto O’Rourke may have lost, but he redefined how we are meant to look at what a Democrat is capable of in a part of the country like Texas.

Additional gains include the victory of Jared Polis who became the first openly gay man to win a gubernatorial election. Additionally, according to the Washington Post, we will see a record high of women heading to congress– over 100 — following this election.

We have yet to see the results of these progressive victories. However, we can breathe easy knowing that, if you oppose Donald Trump and the fascist white supremacy he brought with him, the country is in slightly better hands than it was yesterday.
