The concept of the rich living in a different universe than you or I is an all too common one, and the fallout of the behavior of world famous serial rapist and occasional movie producer, Harvey Weinstein seemed to be one of them. While Weinstein used his power to get away with countless act of non consensual sex for a very long time, this all came to a stop when Ronan Farrow, with the aid of the New Yorker, and a separate report from the New York Times, revealed Weinstein acts of serial rape to the country. These revelations led to the #MeToo movement, the all important movement that at long last exposed serial abusers like an exterminator to roaches,
Weinstein was taken away in cuffs earlier this summer, but was released quickly to await his trial following a million dollar bail. Now it seems like he could be looking at life in prison following three additional counts added by the Manhattan District Attorney to his existing charge. One is a criminal sexual act in the first degree, and the other two are counts of predatory sexual assaults. Both are Class A-II penalties regarding an incident in July, 2006 wherein Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on one of his victims, and each count has up to ten years to life attached to it.
So… some good news for people who think rapists should go to jail.
However, the Manhattan District Attorney is not yet finished, and is encouraging more of Weinstein’s victims to come forward, saying:
A Manhattan Grand Jury has now indicted Harvey Weinstein on some of the most serious sexual offenses that exist under New York’s Penal Law. This indictment is the result of the extraordinary courage exhibited by the survivors who have come forward. Our investigation continues. If you are a survivor of the predatory abuse with which Mr. Weinstein is charged, there is still time to pursue justice. Please call us at 212-335-9373.
