Conspiracy theories are taking over Twitter … again

Us trying to make sense of all of these theories!

Today #IsAConspiracyTheory is trending again on Twitter this morning and users are sharing everything from outlandish conspiracy theories about the government to outlandish conspiracies about birds not being real. And let’s be honest, we’re here for it. So today I am going to be going through some of the most popular tweets from the hashtag and ranking my favorites. I am not an expert on any of these theories by any means. I took one college course on the rhetoric used around conspiracies but that does not make me an expert. Keep in mind these are in no particular order. Obviously the efficacy and truth to these theories are up for debate and I am not saying that any of the statements put forth are fact. This is just what has been said in the Twitterverse.

The Bermuda Triangle is a Portal to Another Dimension

Let’s be real here, the Bermuda Triangle is one of the most popular conspiracy theories and has been around for years. Ships and planes go missing there all of the time and science has not come up with an explanation other than tumultuous water or flying conditions. Out of all of the conspiracy theories you’re going to see on this list this feels like one of the least creative. But they get points for trying and reviving an oldy but a goodie.  6.5/10

Mark Zuckerberg is an Alien or Robot or Both

The CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg on several occasions has been labeled as an alien, or a robot, or both? The consensus around this conspiracy theory is that he is certainly not human. Most of the speculation around this one comes with how symmetrical his face is, and how calm he was when he was being questioned at a House of Representatives meeting back in 2019. But since then the internet has run with the theory. This picture of him caked in sunscreen doesn’t help… I would believe it but the thought of this robot alien owning all of my data is a little scary. 8/10

The 2020 Cats Movie was the Cause of the Coronavirus

This was some of the quality content that I was hoping to find when I was looking through this hashtag when I saw it was trending. It said that as soon as the Cats movie was released in the United States there was an immediate surge in cases in this country, and all over the world. Now I would not wish the sight of weird quasi CGI cats with teeth on anyone. But this one seems a little coincidental albeit very funny. I am going to have to give this one 4/10 only because we shouldn’t be downplaying the damage that Cats or the Coronavirus have done to the American psyche. 4/10

Birds Aren’t Real

The theory here is that all of the birds died during the Regan administration and were replaced with surveillance drones. If you want to get deeper into it be my guest, there are whole books worth of information on this one as well as a cool website. My personal favorite conspiracy theory. 11/10

And here are some honorable mentions from Twitter

Mattress Firm is a front for something much sketchier than mattress salesmanship. I haven’t really looked into this one, but an interesting take and I have never actually entered a mattress store so 5.75/10

Girl Scouts were responsible for the crop circle phenomenon. I would not put it past them, those girls are persistent- especially if there is a new badge on the line. 9.5/10
