Tweets related to the 2012 European Championship constantly kept themselves among the worldwide trending topics throughout the nearly month-long tournament thanks to millions of fans, who tweeted often and passionately. So it was to no one’s surprise on Sunday when the final between Spain and Italy attracted a record number of tweets, with more than 16.5 million tweets from around the world, according to Twitter.
That number peaked at 15,358 tweets per second as Juan Mata scored the fourth goal of the match, setting a new sports-related record on Twitter. Spain would win the match 4-0, the largest win margin for a Championship game, to become the only European squad to capture back-to-back championships. The previous record-holder was this year’s Super Bowl, which peaked at 12,233 tweets per second.
Twitter shared a data visualization showing how frequently tweeps mentioned the 16 participating team from the group stages through the championship match. The visualization was shared on Twitter’s official blog.
