  • The holiday season isn’t only about the presents, the lights and the food. With Christmas comes quality cinema, and lucky for us, the movie theaters are some of the only places open on Christmas Day. The year is coming to an end, and I applaud Hollywood for saving the best movies for last.

Here are five movies you should check out while visiting the theaters this holiday season:

  • 1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

This will be the third Star Wars movie to be made since Disney purchased the rights to the franchise. So far, The Force Awakens and Rogue One have become fan favorites, but how will this movie keep the story going? Who are Rey’s parents? Will Luke Skywalker teach her the ways of The Force? Will Leia find peace with her son, Kylo Ren? I think everyone’s excited to see which direction the movie takes.

  • 2. Jumanji

This movie will either make it or break it. Nowadays, most movies lack originality and are often recycled and rebooted. The original Jumanji, starring the great Robin Williams, came out in 1995 and became an instant classic. In this remake, four teenagers are accidentally transported into a Jumanji arcade game, where they must survive in a dangerous tropical jungle. The bad news? They have to “play” as their chosen adult avatars. The good news? Dwayne Johnson.

  • 3. The Greatest Showman

Around this time last year, people around the world were raving about La La Land, a modern day musical starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Hollywood decided to take another stab at the musical scene with The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, and Zendaya. The soundtrack already sounds amazing, but I think most people are excited for Zac Efron to revive his short-lived singing career.

  • 4. Downsizing

Would you permanently shrink yourself to live a better life? In attempt to solve the issue of over-population, scientists uncover a way to shrink citizens in size so they can live in tiny, wealthy communities. When Matt Damon’s character agrees with his wife to downsize, he’s all for it. After the procedure, he learns that his wife backed out of the shrinking process, meaning he’s left to live a tiny life on his own. This original movie will surely make you laugh, but if you’re like me, expect a few tears along the way.

  • 5. The Shape of Water

Groundbreaking writer and director Guillermo del Toro introduces us to his latest fantasy-drama, The Shape of Water. The story develops when a mute janitor builds a seemingly romantic relationship with an aquatic specimen at a research facility. This film is dark, dramatic and eerily romantic. Guillermo del Toro never fails when it comes to cinema.
