Donald Glover LEAKS Deadpool Script
When I heard earlier that Donald Glover’s “Deadpool: The Animated Series” was cancelled before it even aired an episode, like everyone else, I was disappointed, and it seems obvious that I wasn’t the only one. Donald Glover — the brilliant writer of Atlanta, 30 Rock, and also some of our favorite albums, tweeted out his disappointment not just in tweet form, but also in script form…
It’s not clear if the script in question is an actual episode reworked into something that, in the spirit of Deadpool, comments on its own existence, or if its something Donald Glover cranked out off the cuff as one film critic suggests, but it is shockingly excellent. The plot revolves around Deadpool going to Sudan and having to save the last male white rhino (who recently died in real life), and includes references to who bit Beyonce’s face, the death of Stephon Clark at the hands of the racist Sacramento police force, and Mark Zuckerberg’s current attempts to pave over their Cambridge Analytica troubles.
Much more interestingly, however, was the script’s fourth wall breaking attempts to discuss why the show was cancelled. Was the script, as Deadpool as written by Glover thinks out loud, too black for Marvel? Did Marvel just want to sell toys? Was it because Deadpool called adult Marvel fans who collect toys, pedophiles? Probably none of those reasons, although why Marvel would refuse one of America’s hottest and most interesting writers from writing one of its most popular characters, I don’t know.
Was it the Disney merger? Come on! Anyway, here is the script, as threaded by Glover. Give the whole thing a read. You will not regret it. The script is titled Finale, most likely due to the fact that chances are thin that Glover is going to write more, but who knows. Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool movie only lived after he leaked the test footage. Maybe lightning will strike twice.
