It’s been an exciting year for fans of both Janelle Monae and Tessa Thompson. The former came out as pansexual, leading a legion of dummies to google what that means, but leading a legion of smarties to know it’s basically a sexual attraction to all genders or gender identity. We smarties! Janelle Monae in part foreshadowed her coming out with a series of music videos that led to the album “Dirty Computer” which co-starred Tessa Thompson as an focus of affection. Well guess what folks, that wasn’t just another role! That wasn’t just Tessa Thompson took off her make up as Valkyrie from Thor: Ragnarok and ran over to Dirty Computer for a quick paycheck. Nah, buddy. It turns out Tessa Thompson and Janelle Monae are DATING in real life (aka the clean computer IDK).
Tessa Thompson, in an interview with Net-a-Porter, revealed her romantic relationship with the Archandroid (do people call Janelle Monae that or do I just call Janelle Monae that?), citing that although the two queer icons want privacy, after hearing how inspired people were to come out in light of Monae’s album and announcement, decided to make her relationship public. Monae said:
“It’s tricky, because Janelle and I are just really private people and we’re both trying to navigate how you reconcile wanting to have that privacy and space, and also wanting to use your platform and influence.. I can take things for granted because of my family – it’s so free and you can be anything that you want to be. I’m attracted to men and also to women. If I bring a woman home, [or] a man, we don’t even have to have the discussion. That was something I was conscientious of in terms of this declaration around Janelle and myself. I want everyone else to have that freedom and support that I have from my loved ones. But so many people don’t. So, do I have a responsibility to talk about that? Do I have a responsibility to say in a public space that this is my person?”
Still, she stops short of officially declaring them a couple, saying:
“We’re so close, we vibrate on the same frequency. If people want to speculate about what we are, that’s okay. It doesn’t bother me.”
Come on Thompson! We are gossip hounds of the highest order who must know on the romantic pairings of our favorite superstars, celebrities and Pete Davidson. However, it sounds like she came out in everything but confirmation. The announcement is sure to give inspiration to queer people around the world, and hell, to all of us. Now let’s put Janelle Monae in Thor! Make her Valkyrie’s girlfriend! Come on! I’m a doofus nerd! Come on!!
