Guardians of the Galaxy Cast Write Open Letter In Support of James Gunn

The cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise — including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff (who signature is incredible) — signed an open letter expressing their support for recently fired director James Gunn, and a distaste for the bad faith tactics of the political groups who wanted to get James Gunn out of the way.

It’s been about a week since Disney got so terrified of some potential bad press, that they created more bad press than they could ever muster by firing Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn from directing the third film in the franchise. The firing led to a bad press campaign for the alt right after discovering a series of tasteless jokes Gunn made early in his directing career on Twitter. Gunn has apologized for the jokes around the release of the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, so the focus on them seemed surprising, but they dovetailed with the director Tweeting criticism of Donald Trump. Given these details of the firing, the cast originally Tweeted obliquely surrounding the situation (save for Michael Rooker, who deleted his Twitter feed, and Dave Bautista who minced no words) and the letter outlines why — a desire to figure out what they want to say and show a unified front.

The cast does not go as far as to say that they will no longer be acting in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, but they do show a support of James Gunn as Disney fires him out of the idea that the distaste for the director is widespread. Unlike Disney, the stars also make no bones that the reasons behind this firing are part of a larger political battle, saying:

There is little due process in the court of public opinion. James is likely not the last good person to be put on trial. Given the growing political divide in this country, it’s safe to say instances like this will continue, although we hope Americans from across the political spectrum can ease up on the character assassinations and stop weaponizing mob mentality.

Indeed. If the Guardians of the Galaxy (Rocket Raccoon! Groot! Star-Lord! Gamora! Drax! Nebula! Yondu! Mantis!) could stop Ronan and Ego the Living Planet, then the alt right should be no problem… right? Right!?
