James Gunn to Possibly Write and Direct DC’s Suicide Squad 2

After Disney was convinced to fire James Gunn by a bad faith alt right movement due to his criticism of Donald Trump (you can read about all that here), the outcry was vast, ranging from fans to the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy itself, with Drax actor Dave Bautista being the most prominent voice as he threatened to quit if James Gunn’s original script for the movie was not used. Now, after all of the sturm und drang, the Guardians franchise is being put on hold as Disney tried to figure out what to do without its architect. Meanwhile, James Gunn is signing up, ironically, for a franchise seemingly inspired by his own as he is in talks to write and direct the upcoming installment of the Suicide Squad franchise.

For those who remember all the way back to about a year ago, the Suicide Squad franchise was critiqued for giving a lot of great characters and performances essentially nothing to good to do. For every amazing touch like “Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn” there was a perpetually underused and uber hammy Jared Leto Joker, along with a movie that wasn’t sure what exactly its tone was supposed to be, and didn’t seem very interested in figuring that element out. James Gunn, who perfectly balanced the comedic with the dramatic in a franchise starring semi criminal weird outsiders, seems like the perfect choice for this.

Likewise, this is one of the rare blows that DC had towards Marvel. It’s yet to be seen if the Guardians franchise ever recovers from the loss of its architect, but now that DC has poached one of Marvel’s auteurs, and auteurs seem to be in season for DC if the previews for the upcoming Joker movie are any indication, its long maligned superhero universe has a chance of becoming something film goers can finally get behind.
