To say that there has been a lot of drama in the YouTube space recently would be a bit of an understatement. But I am here to explain everything you need to know about the recent drama between Tati Westbrook, James Charles, Jeffree Star, Shane Dawson, and why this is a little bit more than just some interpersonal YouTube tea.

For those of us who need a refresher, a year ago Tati Westbrook released a video entitled “Bye Sister” (which has since been deleted) claiming to be canceling James Charles for allegations of sexual assault, as well as partnering with Sugar Bear Hair, a competitor to her own line of hair gummies Halo Beauty. This led to a falling out between Jeffree, Tati, and James back in 2019. James lost several thousand followers and released a statement saying that he had not committed any of the acts of sexual misconduct that he had been accused of. At the time no one had come forward with formal allegations against James publicly.

Next let’s talk about the players involved, last week Tati released a video titled “Breaking My Silence…”. The video was meant to expose Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson for ruining her relationship with James Charles. The video has received millions of views and the allegations made in the video are pretty serious. Tati even threatened legal actions against Shane and Jeffree as well as “anyone who aided them”.

Tati says that she was Gaslit by Shane and Jeffree into believing allegations against James Charles for sexual assault. Claiming that all allegations against James were false and going back on her previous “Bye Sister” video.

Amidst all of this Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson are embroiled in their own personal drama across the internet space for several racist videos that have resurfaced from their past. Overall no one is really looking good right now. But who cares? Isn’t this all just interpersonal YouTube tea between people in the spotlight with too much time on their hands? The short answer is No.

I turn it over to this TikTok created by Hank Green to explain why it is more than just some tea brewing.

This is not drama, it is creators confronting the extent to which they profited off of indulging in bias and sharing that with their young audiences.

Green essentially says that this “tea” and these racist allegations against Jeffree and Shane, as well as the sexual assault allegations that were allegedly made against James, are not small accusations. And the threat of legal actions on Tati’s front elevates this controversy to a whole other level.

Allegations of sexual assault should be taken seriously. Racist incidents and allegations should be taken seriously, and by conflating the racism and sexual assault to interpersonal drama there ia a dangerous precedent created.

But how are you feeling about all of this? Do you believe Tati and James? Or Jeffree and Shane? Or neither??? Let us know in the comments down below.
