Do you hear the glorious sounds of children laughing, Mr. Rogers esc energy coming from John Mulaney and Jake Gyllenhaal having a music-induced mental breakdown? Well that my dear friends is the sound of the Sack Lunch Bunch reuniting. Hold onto your hats because John Mulaney and his crew of 12 children is reuniting for two more musical specials coming to Comedy Central early next year.

In late 2019 John Mulaney released the fourth of his one-hour comedy specials, The Sack Lunch Bunch on Netflix. The comedy special starred Mulaney and a cast of 12 kids putting together a musical comedy act that was appropriate and hilariously funny for both children and adults (though was it really appropriate for kids?).

special also featured guest stars, Annaleigh Ashford, Andre DeShields, David Byrne, and his wife, Anna Marie Tendler-Mulaney. In interviews, before it’s release, Mulaney said that he was aiming to create the kind of comedy that he experienced as a child watching children’s television in the 80s.

This does not come as a shock though, Comedy Central is in the middle of a much larger rebrand of the company, focusing more on adult animation, original comedy movies, and partnering with big names like Mulaney to their new projects.

“I was an intern at Comedy Central when I was barely older than the kids in the Sack Lunch Bunch. I wasn’t a very good intern, so I am psyched,” Mulaney said in a press release. “They hired me again. We are thrilled to bring these specials to Comedy Central: a place where I have had so many good times.” Chris McCarthy, president of the ViacomCBS Entertainment and Youth group, said in an interview with Vulture.  He hopes the deal ends up as “just the beginning of a long-standing partnership.”

Folks on Twitter are also chiming in to share their excitement about the new Sack Lunch Bunch.
