Taylor Swift’s Political Statement Leads To 65 Thousand New Voter Registrations

It’s a weird thing to think about — if Taylor Swift turned away from her then infamous reticence to announce her political affiliations, could she have turned the tide in the 2016 elections? Whatever, no time to rehash the 2016 elections, as much as that is everyone’s favorite hobby until we somehow right this manic ship, we have to focus on the 2018 elections coming up, the general of which is on November 6th, and in that regard there is some good news. Following Taylor Swift’s unexpected political endorsement of Tennessee Senate candidate Phil Bredesen and US House of Representatives candidate Jim Cooper, both Democrats, voter registrations have spiked by 65,000 in the past 24 hours, according to Vote.org.

To put that in some context, in September there were 190,178 voters registered for the entire month, and in August a mere 56,669 voters were registered for that 31 day period. So, thank you Taylor Swift. For both hopefully turning the tide of the election to get away from Trumpism, and for making the ever ongoing battle between Swift fans and Kanye fans all the more nuanced. Kanye was the conservative one all along! Who would have thought!

Mary Mancini, chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party, praised Swift in a statement to Buzzfeed, saying: “To have someone of her stature and with such a large microphone to step up and actually reinforce what we already know here is definitely going to boost the morale of people who have been told Tennesseans are divisive. Having her come out and say this so publicly will make people sit up and say, ya know what, I’m not alone here.”

Most of all we’re excited to rub it in Mike Huckabee’s face when he said that this effect would mostly be on 13 year olds. Whoops!

You should register to vote too. Wanna do it? Well, you can do so here at Vote.org. Come on folks, let’s keep going!
